How would you describe your work? What’s your trademark?
I love creating characters, whether low-key and undone or big and extreme. It’s important to me that there’s a story and an element of beauty in every look. I’m a big fan of reinvention, constantly exploring new ways to transform and redefine appearances through hair.
How did you get into your chosen career?
Growing up, I had a love-hate relationship with my naturally dark, curly hair. I was always experimenting with ways to change it, trying to find a style that felt like “me.” At 15, I did a work placement in the most avant-garde hair salon my hometown had to offer, and I fell in love with the craft. With just two weeks of experience, I felt confident enough to start giving cuts and colors to my friends, and from there, I steadily worked my way up in the industry.
What other jobs have you had?
My first job was making sandwiches every Saturday, chopping up hundreds of onions, and mixing huge vats of coleslaw. I’ve also worked as a receptionist at a sound recording studio, where I met my comedic hero, Julia Davis. Additionally, I had a night job at a cocktail bar after days at the salon, despite not knowing much about making cocktails. Each experience taught me valuable lessons, and I believe that hard work always prevails in the end. Eventually, I started working with some incredible hairstylists on shows, which led to becoming a first assistant for five years before being signed.
What have you watched/heard/read lately that has inspired you?
I’m constantly inspired by the people around me—on the street, on the tube—there are major characters everywhere if you’re looking for them. I’m particularly drawn to how people express their individuality through beauty. Recently, I watched the film “Toni Erdman,” which reminded me not to take myself or life too seriously. I’m currently reading “Collected Stories” by Cookie Mueller, who was Nan Goldin’s muse. Another inspiring watch was the documentary “The Beauty and The Bloodshed,” which chronicles Goldin’s life and work.
What do you love about what you do?
I enjoy the variety that each day brings, meeting new people, and constantly learning from my peers and my team. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some incredible places through my work, and it’s a lot of fun.
What have been the biggest challenges you have faced professionally?
Maintaining a work-life balance can be particularly challenging in this industry. It’s easy to let work consume you, especially when being busy is often equated with being successful. However, it’s important to recognize that there will always be quieter periods, and taking that time to rest and reset is vital. It’s something I’m still trying to master myself.
