Exclusive Interview with Model and Creative Director Jana Marvanová
Can you tell us about your background and how you got started in modeling and creative directing?
My journey into modeling and creative directing began during one of the most challenging periods of my life. I was a survivor of abuse at 15, followed by toxic relationships that nearly cost me everything. In my process of healing, I had to learn how to love and believe in myself again. Writing became my therapy—I started a blog to share my experiences, pairing them with self-expressive photos.
As my audience grew, brands began reaching out for collaborations, and a TV station interviewed me. That’s when I realized my story could help others, and I saw modeling not just as a career, but as a powerful platform to inspire resilience and self-worth.
How do you approach the creative process when working on a project?
Creativity, for me, starts with research. I immerse myself in the project, understanding the brand’s story, audience, and vision. I create vision boards to visualize ideas, ensuring that the aesthetic and message align seamlessly. Every project needs to resonate with me on a personal level, so I always ask myself, “Does this work reflect who I am and what I stand for?”
How do you ensure that the vision of a project is aligned with the client’s expectations?
Communication is key. I believe in deep discussions with clients to understand their needs. However, intuition and empathy also play an important role. Sometimes, a client may have an initial vision that needs refinement, and it’s my job to guide them toward an execution that balances their goals with strong creative direction. A project works best when both sides trust the process.
How do you maintain strong relationships with clients and team members during a project?
Boundaries are crucial. I invest my heart and soul into my projects, which naturally creates strong connections with clients and team members. However, I always ensure that work remains the priority. We can have moments of friendship, but professionalism comes first. Honest communication is the foundation of any successful collaboration.
How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques in modeling and creative directing?
Traveling is my greatest teacher. I observe how fashion evolves in different parts of the world, attending beauty pageants, fashion shows, and industry events. Additionally, I never stop learning—I’m studying at university, taking courses, and constantly expanding my knowledge. Staying relevant in this fast-changing industry requires a commitment to growth.
Can you walk us through your experience working on a particularly challenging project and how you overcame obstacles?
One of my biggest challenges was founding MJ TOP MODEL and Modeling Masterclass by TAYLLORCOX. Having my own competition and a dedicated space for girls was a big dream for me. I wanted to create a safe environment where girls can educate themselves and pursue their dreams, just as I did. I left my job in journalism to become a girl who left her job to live. Now, my next challenge is my participation in Miss Global, which I have been striving for over the past three years. My perseverance helps me fulfill this project; I never give up and always pay attention to every detail.
How do you handle criticism or feedback from clients or team members?
Constructive criticism is part of growth. When clients critique my work, I see it as an opportunity to improve. Fortunately, I work with an amazing team, so conflicts are rare. However, I do struggle when people criticize the work I do for others, especially charity projects. Giving back is personal to me, so I take those comments more deeply. But at the end of the day, I focus on the impact I’m making rather than the negativity.
How do you balance creativity with practical considerations like budget and deadlines?
Time management is everything. I’m the kind of person who stresses if I’m even five minutes late. I rely on my diary, color-coding, and stickers to stay organized. Budget-wise, I ensure every project has financial management in place from the start. Planning ahead allows me to deliver high-quality work while staying within practical limits.
Can you share an innovative or unique approach you’ve taken that led to a project’s success?
I believe that the best ideas often come from our hardest times. My most innovative moments have emerged when I felt like giving up, but instead, I pushed through. My ability to transform struggles into creative energy is what makes my work stand out.
How do you incorporate diversity and inclusivity into your work as a model and creative director?
I don’t fit the traditional mold of a model—I’m not the tallest, nor do I have the stereotypical measurements. But I never let that stop me. My journey is proof that anyone can succeed, regardless of industry standards. I use my platform to empower others, especially women who have been told they “can’t” do something. Representation is important, and I strive to create spaces where everyone is valued.
How do you ensure your creative vision aligns with a brand’s values and mission?
Once again, communication and research. I take the time to understand a brand’s identity before bringing my ideas to the table. A successful collaboration happens when both creative vision and brand values are in sync.
What keeps you motivated and inspired to create impactful projects?
Life itself is my biggest inspiration. I wake up every day grateful for the chance to create. Travel, music, food, and surrounding myself with creative people keep my energy high. I believe that if you approach every project with passion, it will always lead to something meaningful.
